After completing my PhD, I joined Bloomberg L.P.’s AI group in July 2019 where I currently work as a machine learning engineer. We design, develop, and implement machine learning systems that extract various financial signals from both structured and unstructured data. All opinions expressed on this blog are my own.
I started my Ph.D. in August 2013 in the Department of Computer Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Working under the supervision of Professor Charles V. Stewart, I developed computer vision and machine learning algorithms for large-scale automatic photo-identification of individual animals from identifying contours. I successfully defended my thesis in May 2019. See the Research section for details.
Before starting graduate school, I spent November 2012 to June 2013 working at iKubu Engineering (now Garmin Stellenbosch) as a software engineer. My role was to use C++ and the open-source Point Cloud Library to develop computer vision algorithms for object recognition.
In December 2012, I graduated cum laude from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, where I wrote my undergraduate research thesis on SURF for object recognition.
